Portavin Touch Wine 07

On Sunday 25th November 2007, the Touch Fields in Adelaide's South Parklands played host venue for a unique inner city wine and food extravanganza.

48 teams from wineries across the country competed in the touch football tournament for the prized Portavin Touch Wine Champions Cup.

Besides winning the Cup the aim of Portavin Touch Wine is to raise as much money as possible for the Hutt Street Centre, Adelaide's leading frontline agency for Adelaide's homeless and marginalised people.

The day offers over 70 wines for public tasting, food from Hutt Streets leading café's plus a celebrity challenge match featuring Event Ambassador Nick Farr-Jones, captains Rachael Sporn and Mark Bickley, SAFM's Rabbitt and Louie, Adelaide living legend Johnny Haysman (yes that guy who walks up and down Rundle Mall), Matthew Primus, Graham Cornes and others.

Shirazzamatazz, the Fox Creek Team, gave it a good go but fell out of the competition in the first round of the semi finals against the Reshke Bulls, who were the overall winners. Not too bad considering the team included two new recruits that had never touched a footy let alone watched a game.

The event highlight, well at least for the Fox Creek staff was watching our General Manager, Paul Rogers, sprint the hundred metres while picking up a touch footy in the Fox Creek Mascot suit. The weather was not that kind to him with all that extra fur. Poor Paul was dripping wet after playing three games of touch footy and then running the furry sprint in 32 degree weather.

It was great to see so many of McLaren Vale's wineries supporting such a worthwhile event. Maybe we can take out the Cup next year.
