With the help of the SA Premier’s Art Partnership Fund, Fox Creek hosted the Fleurieu Water Prize in our barrel shed. Artists from right across Australia were invited to enter the 2008 Fleurieu Biennale Art Prize which is held in various locations on the Fleurieu Peninsula from the 7th to the 30th November.  Exhibitions are open to the public between 10 & 5pm daily.  Established in 1998, the Art Prize celebrates the enduring importance and the contemporary significance of landscape painting in the Australian art world. With awards totalling $91,000 the program ranks as one of the most significant visual arts prize programs across Australia.

As the sponsorship was acquisitioned we were fortunate enough to get to keep the winning work called ‘So Much Water So Close to Home’ by Shonah Trescott.  Shonah, who is from New South Wales, has painted mini landscapes with oil on 100 sealed postcards.  She is only 26 years of age and she has already won more awards than we can list here and has traveled extensively on scholarships.   Since 2006, she has exhibited regularly in both group and solo exhibitions in Sydney, Leipzig, Berlin, Mallorca, Ireland and Bosnia.  The three judges of The Water Prize were unanimous and we are thankful as we get such pleasure from Shonah’s work every day.

The 2008 judging panel included Artist, Art Educator and Former Director of the Art Gallery of Western Australia and National Gallery of Australia, Betty Churcher; Artbank Director Geoffrey Cassidy and artist Philip Wolfhagen.  Chair of the Fleurieu Biennale Board, Nicky Downer says “The Art Prize is a national celebration of landscape painting and Australian art and artists”.
